courses.gif Capitol City, home of Lincoln, delicious horseshoes, and now another full disc golf course! That's right Springfield, IL is expanding its disc golf facilities by another full 18 hole course, but what makes this new edition is that the course is nestled conveniently in Lincoln Park where a championship class 18 hole course already resides.

Thanks to the continued efforts of the Springfield Disc Golf Club and the Springfield Park District this dream of having 36 holes of disc golf in one park is becoming a reality. While the course is not 100% complete it is however playable at the moment. I've had the opportunity to play this course a few times now over the past several months and each time have enjoyed playing with the local club members that are always willing to show out-of-towners around.

Now you might ask how is this new course going to play out? Will it affect the old course in anyway? What’s a horseshoe? These are all good questions and ones that I can hopefully answer with the knowledge I have gained over many rounds with the local club members. Lincoln Park as it is now will actually go through a slight re-configuration.

Current holes # 15, 16, and 18 will be re-configured to become holes # 1, 2, and 3 for the new North course. Holes Jim putting on North course# 4-18 of the North course are all new and are in the ground currently. Teepads for these new holes have not been laid yet but are in the works for the near future. There will be 3 additional baskets put in for the South course to become a full 18 again.

This is still in the planning process the last time I visited, but they had the general idea of where these new holes would be. If I remember correctly it would be holes # 3, 5, and 14. The South course will start where it did before and end on what used to be hole # 14.

Overall I think the re-configuration will work nicely and will not change the South course to drastically to take away from what worked in the old course in any way. I’ve included a link to a full photo album of the new North course at Lincoln and hope to add the South course next time I am up there.

I guess some of you may be wondering what a horseshoe is? Well it’s basically a hamburger patty on bread, covered with french fries, then slathered with cheese sauce! Springfield is known as the originator of this tasty treat, but can be found even here in Carbondale at Pinch Penny. If you’ve never had one I highly recommend that you get one while in Springfield at D'Arcy’s Pint which serves them up with their perfectly poured Guinness.

All 36 of the baskets in Lincoln park are installed as they gear up for the MotherLoad on the Mother Road tournament May 15-16. This will be a PDGA B-Tier event, and surely one that is not to be missed.
