tournament.gif It's that time of year again, cold, windy, possibly even snowy, you guessed it it's time for Ice Bowl!

This yearly event is aimed at raising money and food to help fight hunger. The Ice Bowl tournament is now in its 23rd year and in 2009 raised close to $250,000 and almost 60,000 lbs of food. The money and food was raised from the roughly 133 reporting events across the world and Carbondale was included in those numbers.

Last year we raised $600 and 340 lbs of food, not bad for our initial Ice Bowl. This year we hope to do a bit better with a goal of 500 lbs of food that will go directly to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry right here in Carbondale. As most of you know this past year has been hard for many and this just confirms the need to do what we can to help those in need during these winter months especially.

Registration is now open and for those that register before the event online you will get a $5 discount off the registration price of $25. We also require that everyone at least bring in 2 cans of food to the registration, but encourage participants to get as much food as possible. Those that wait until the day of the event registration will be $25. Early registration also helps us decide how many discs to order, so sign-up as early as you can!

When: January 23, 2010

  • Check-in: 10:00am
  • Players Meeting: 10:45am
  • Start 1st Round: 11:00am
  • Start 2nd Round:  1:00pm

So what's in store for those that attend? Well to begin there will be 2 rounds of 18 out on the frozen tundra around the lake, and if we are lucky the lake may be playable due to the thick ice that has been forming over the cold snap we are in. One round will have OB's and the other round will not have OB's. We will also hold CTP's for each round, a ring of fire or two, and perhaps a few more contests depending on our sponsorship support.

We will break for lunch, which will be provided by Great Boars of Fire. Any participant is encouraged to bring in chili, soup, hot chocolate, etc if they so choose, the more the better.

Sponsorship you say? Why yes this year we are encouraging sponsors to get involved either through sponsoring the teepads or baskets. As anyone knows who has played the Campus Lake course there are only 9 baskets, but 18 tees. For those that want to sponsor a basket they essentially sponsor 2 holes for their $50 donation. For those that want a smaller donation the teepad sponsorship is right up your alley at a mere $25 per teepad. What do you get for your sponsorship dollars besides helping fight hunger in our local area? Each basket sponsor will get to have their logo and information at each basket, and for the teepad sponsors they will be able to have their information at each teepad they sponsor. All sponsors will be mentioned here on the SIDiscGolf.com website, be able to have material added to the player packages, and acknowledged at the players meetings and awards ceremonies.

So who's on board so far?

So what's in it for the players? I love players packages just as much as the next disc golfer so we will be trying to make this the best player package we have had in recent memory (hold the old man jokes please!), each player will receive an Ice Bowl 2010 stamped INNOVA Champion Boss, 1 year membership to DGU, ParagonDisc Golf promotional items, and more!

So what else do you have to do this January 23? Don't be a wimp or a whiner and get registered today! Help make a difference in this area and possibily walk away with a new INNOVA DISCatcher Traveler basket and more! Dress warm and see you out on the frozen course!

We are still waiting on a few sponsors to turn in their money, but overall we had 14 people play in the Ice Bowl. Slightly up form last year and with the money raised through sponsorship we look to easily surpass our goal of 500 lbs of food!

Thanks to all those that played, helped, and sponsored this event, we hope it grows each and every year. We will have official results, photos, etc up shortly.
