The 2008 Discraft Ace Race was held recently in Carbondale and was a complete success! This is the second hosting of the Ace Race by SIDiscGolf.com and looks to be an event that we will hold annually.
We had a total of 16 players participate in the event this year which is slightly less then last years turnout but was still a fun event none the less! We were glad to see some players show up that we have not seen all semester as well as some new faces. Even Shim's dad came down from Effingham to throw with us which was nice of him to make the trip.
The day was once again a beautiful sunny day but like last year the wind decided to kick up a little bit to make things interesting.
As the first round started we knew it would be a good round as we could hear the occasional "Yeahs!" and "Oooohhhs" meaning that people here making some close calls, hitting some baskets, or making some aces! After the round was done we had one ace recorded and many with metal hits scored.
Onto the chili and taco soup, thanks Missy! We thought that 2 crockpots full of soup would be enough but as people started scraping the pots for more we knew it was a success and would plan for more next year.
Round 2 started and it seemed that people started to get better associated with the ace race disc as to me at least it seemed overstable for sure. For me this was the round that I made ground on the leader Paul which had 1 ace and a few metal hits on his score card already. Hole 2 provided me with my first ace of the day and it was one that I celebrated loudly! As this being my third shot at the ace race with no aces and only 1 metal scored to date this seemded long over due. As the round went one me and Paul were neck and neck throughout the day. He would score a metal hit and I would return the favor. It came down to the final 6 holes that the club setup in a new area by the lake that was never intended for disc golf but made for some new interesting shots. I was able to score my second ace of the day on hole# 22 which to me seemed like it was going to sail right over the basket but instead dropped in with authority. That ace put me up on Paul by an ace but he had more metal hits now and was behind me on the course, so I waited. Paul came very close on holes 23 and 24 just missing on both cases which made for a tense ending to a great day of disc golf.
All in all it was a great event in my mind and others seemed to enjoy it as well. I hope in the years to come the event will grow in numbers as we get the word out early next time. I have uploaded a few photos I took while out and about the course.
